Our network of Road Contacts - people who welcome newcomers to the village and can offer information on village activities. They are also available to help their neighbours in case of need, such as in the event of a major electricity outage, the road contacts can provide neighbours with updates on when service is expected to be restored and with information about alternatives for those with no power for cooking or heating.

As the village continues to develop with people coming and going and our volunteer’s circumstances changing, we are always in need of replacements or additional contacts.

Road Contacts in the village

Marnhull Village Care (MVC) offer a door-to-door car service for people in the parish who cannot arrange their own transport for essential trips; typically for hospital, doctor’s or dental appointments.

This service is provided by volunteer drivers, and we are always keen to recruit more volunteers!

If you do decide to join us as a volunteer driver you will not be asked to commit to particular days, times or journeys. You will simply be contacted by an MVC car service coordinator from time to time to see if you can give someone a lift. You should not worry about declining the request if you need to. There is no obligation on you to accept.

On joining we ask you to complete a Volunteer Driver Information Form. This gives us the information we need to contact you and records any general restrictions on your availability. The form also asks you to confirm that you and your car(s) are fit to provide this service, in accordance with MVC’s duty of care to our users. We will do an annual check with you about the information we hold, and ask that you tell us if any of the details change.

We provide you with comprehensive guidance on your role as a volunteer driver, and our car service coordinator is always available to provide any support you may need while driving for us.

Covering your costs

Passengers cover your costs direct, at a rate based on mileage and approved by HMRC. Being a volunteer driver should have no effect on your insurance or tax situation. There are free parking arrangements at most locations, but if you do have to pay to park this charge can be reclaimed.

The rate we charge is for a return trip; ie, transport to the appointment and back home again. There is no charge made for waiting time. Example total mileage charges are:

Sturminster - £4      Stalbridge - £4               Gillingham -  £7        Shaftesbury - £7.50

Blandford  - £13        Yeovil - £15

Tisbury - £15               Dorchester - £20

Poole - £25                   Salisbury  - £30

Bournemouth  - £35    Taunton - £40

If you would like to join us as a volunteer driver, or have questions about doing so, please call the dedicated Marnhull Village Care number: 07777 559076. If your call goes to answerphone leave a message and we will call you back. And - on behalf of the village - thank you!
